Objectives of the Awards Scheme
In cooperation with the NZASIA Society, the Asia:NZ Foundation of New Zealand sponsors postgraduate scholarships supporting thesis-related fieldwork in Asia. The scholarships are intended to assist students in short to medium-term travel to Asia.
The objectives of the scholarships are to:
(1) promote and strengthen advanced study and research on Asia at New Zealand academic institutions offering post-graduate programmes in Asian Studies; and
(2) provide opportunities for post-graduate students specialising in Asian studies in New Zealand institutions to develop and undertake fieldwork in an Asian setting.
Eligibility for the ASIA:NZ-NZASIA Postgraduate research Award
The Awards are tenable by postgraduate students at any tertiary institution in New Zealand who are enrolled full time in a Master's or Doctoral degree, and need supplementary support for overseas fieldwork undertaken as part of the degree.

Asia New Zealand Foundation (Asia:NZ, formerly known as Asia 2000 Foundation of New Zealand) was founded in 1994 as a non-profit, apolitical organisation dedicated to building New Zealand's links with Asia. Through its activities in education, business, media, culture, research and policy studies, Asia:NZ aims to promote initiatives which deepen understanding and relationships between New Zealanders and the peoples of Asia.
New Zealand Asian Studies Society
The New Zealand Asian Studies Society (NZASIA) was founded in 1974 to encourage the spread of knowledge about Asia, its history, culture and role in international affairs.
The objectives of the Society are to:
- Contribute to the knowledge and understanding of Asian polities, societies and civilis-ations by fostering research by its members or others, through the holding of conferences and scientific meetings, through publications, periodicals and the like, through subsidising research and travel, and in any other ways howsoever.
- Disseminate knowledge of Asian polities, societies and civilisations in New Zealand by holding meetings and/or conferences, sponsoring publications, and establishing links amongst specialists in these fields and other educational, cultural and governmental institutions and their members, and amongst such specialists and news media.
- Establish and maintain contacts with Societies of similar or related interests in Asia, Australia, America, Europe and elsewhere, by affiliation or otherwise.
